What is the total cost of registering a Swiss trademark?

The short answer

The total combines official fees with the services agreed with your provider. The IPI's current basic filing fee is CHF 450, with a CHF 100 discount for filing through e-trademark. Searches, advice and additional proceedings are not automatically included in that amount.

Calculate the official fees first

The basic fee covers up to three classes of goods and services. Each class from the fourth currently adds CHF 100. Expedited examination costs another CHF 400. These amounts concern the Swiss procedure and are not an overall price for international protection.

Base your calculation on the actual application: the number of signs, appropriate classes and intended procedure. If the name and logo will be filed separately, budget for separate applications too. A later change in the work requested can make the original quotation unsuitable.

Ask which work the quotation includes

A service price can cover very different tasks. Establish whether the provider merely submits the application or also assesses registrability, searches for similar marks and prepares the goods list. Ask explicitly which countries and types of sign any included search will cover.

Have official fees, professional charges and any VAT shown clearly. Also check whether responses to examination objections are included or charged separately. A low introductory price becomes comparable only when the same specific services and their limitations are placed side by side.

Plan for tasks after registration

The current official renewal fee is CHF 550 for another ten years. Ongoing monitoring, additional countries or defending a dispute can generate further costs. Paying once for an application therefore does not mean that every later step has already been funded.

Before appointing a provider, prepare a short budget showing one-off, possible and recurring items. Record who can authorise additional work. This helps you check an unexpected invoice without missing a genuine deadline or necessary response because internal responsibility has not been established.

What you can do now

  • List the signs and required classes for each application.
  • Confirm official fees and service charges separately.
  • Clarify objection-response and future monitoring costs in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Are three classes included in the basic price?

The official basic fee covers up to three classes. A provider may structure its professional charges differently, so compare the individual components of the total explicitly.

Does a higher price prove that my trademark is conflict-free?

No. The type and scope of the assessment matter. Even a paid search or professional advice cannot guarantee freedom from every later claim.
